wondering what happened to these coins

Post by MakesCents » Tue Feb 23, 2021 6:52 pm

I got these nickels from different places over the years. I am assuming that it was some kind of plating error and that there must be more out there because they are different years. Feel free to share your thoughts. Thx

It can't be a plating error as 1942-43 Tombac Nickels were not plated.
Looks like some sort of environmental damage.

My guesses are dipped/cleaned/polished.

Could those just be the tombac war nickels?

Yes, they are the Tombac war nickels.
About 1/3 of 1942 and all of 1943 nickels were made from Tombac.
They were also the first of the 12 sided nickels
