1980 "Pointed 9"

Post by Enyaw » Wed Apr 13, 2022 3:17 pm

I have looked on this site and online and I haven't been able to find anything like the 9 on this coin. You can see the original length and shape of the 9 in the coin below the "pointed 9" but then it almost looks like it was folded back to create the point when it was struck (which I don't know if that is possible)?
I found two of them that look the same in a box of circulated rolls a few months back but haven't been able to find another one since. If it's PMD there shouldn't be two exactly alike.

I think a partially filled die. There is a small possibility that the bottom of the matrix that makes the dies broke off, but I doubt it.

It is not a filled die. This fold is made by the coin rolling machine when closing the end of the paper roll.

It's not uncommon to see this PMD.

I have a 1990 nickel that has this across all four digits. While unusual, it's pretty common.
