2015 plated 5 cent is black.

Post by CalicoJack » Wed Aug 17, 2022 1:14 pm

I found this curious 2015 Can. 5 cent. It is black, and the pictures don't do it justice it is pitch black to the eye. It really is kind of cool. But my question out here to the hive is ... what the heck? The plating has such a small amount of actual nickel in it that it seems weird to tone this way. At any rate... it's just interesting. Any thoughts? Cheers!

I think that it has been dipped or exposed to something alien. It's not natural or from the mint.

Unlike in the USA, there are no “black beauties” in Canada.
Whatever happened to it to cause the toning happened after it left the mint.
It would be considered damage.

Thanks for the insights. I figured as much, but I'm going to keep it as a damaged-but-awesome looking coin.
