2020 Error nickel?

Post by Rezo » Mon Dec 11, 2023 7:06 pm

Found this 2020 nickel from a box of uncirculated rolls not sure if it would be a planchet flaw or something else?!

Anyone else got any ideas?

Wouldn’t be a planchet flaw or an error, looks like there is something on the coin.
Are those spots raised or incuse.

They aren't raised, I tried to get that in the first picture with the lighting

Gas bubbles coming up through the outer plating? These are layered/plated coins.

Aren't gas bubbles more raised? This seems to have the outer rim indented with the center slightly raised with a hole in it I'm just trying to figure out how it would have indented in this way? But then again I do see where it could look like a gas bubble that has ruptured in someway

Possibly gas bubbles that have broken. It appears that there is a small hole in each one.
No matter what it is, it’s not something that would be considered an error.

That's what I meant, in that the gas bubbles broke and the thin layer of nickel went by-by, and maybe the thin copper plate as well. The coins are 3 layers, with almost 95% of it a steel core and then thin layers of Cu & Ni. Just think of cooking a thick food mixture on the stove when a bubble comes up and breaks with the immediate hole it makes.
