1888 Newfoundland Five Cent Silver - Obverse 2

Post by StephenC » Thu Jan 16, 2025 7:50 pm

I was recently going through my set of Newfoundland Five Cent Silvers, and was pleasantly surprised to realize that my 1888 is the Obverse 2 variety, which is much scarcer. I have attached files with images of both obverse and reverse. It grades at least XF45, and possibly AU. It is a no problems coin, and it has not been cleaned.

Has anyone else encountered this variety? Can anyone give me an estimate as to its value (in loonies)?

If that is an unaltered 5 cent and I believe it is, then I would send it in to have certified.
Depending on th grade, you could have a 4 figure coin. there is no way to grade from
those photos but it would be well worthwhile having it graded, especially if your are
intending on selling it.

Thank you so much for responding! I cannot detect any alterations whatsoever, and when I bought it (about 30 years ago) it was priced as if it were the Obverse 3 coin. Which certification service would you recommend?

That depends on where you live, you didn't include it in your user stats.
If you live in Canada, you can use ICCS on Yonge Street in Toronto.
If you live in the US, then you can use NGC or PCGS.
