1942 ten cents die breakdown

Post by Gerryinthe6ix » Thu Jan 26, 2023 2:16 pm

I have a MS 1942 ten cents that is full of die cracks on both sides. There appears to be doubling in the “19”. An unusual crack going up the king’s cheek, and a bunch around the rim. Enjoy.

Yep, a nice die crack and the die wouldn't have lasted much longer. During the war years, higher grade steel was used for armament and vehicles and coin dies were toward the bottom of the list and they used them until self-destruction. Nice coin example.

I forgot to comment on the doubling of the date and a little on some letters. As coinguy said, it's MD.

What Bill said plus that is Machine Doubling that you see, a worthless type of doubling.

I love these types. The die breakdown in the war years is quite apparent. I have war nickels chock full of cracks.
