1968 siver dimes

Post by rick.page » Tue May 26, 2020 2:38 pm

I am trying to get clarification on the 1968 silver 10 cent piece. Did the Philadelphia mint silver dimes or not? The attached picture shows 2 1968 silver dimes with what I think is different edge marking. Does anyone else have an opinion on this subject. I have already been told that Philadelphia did not produce any silver dimes, but that doesn't explain these two coins. Am I seeing something that isn't there?

According to my reference book, Philly didn't strike any silver dimes .. only nickel. Both Philly and Ottawa struck nickel coins. Only Ottawa struck .500 silver coins. Phila coins have grooves with a square bottom and Ottawa coins have V-shaped bottoms. I think that you have 1 nickel coin and one 50/50 silver from Ottawa.

If you hold each of the coins 3" or so above a hard table and drop them, and see if they sound the same. Even .500 silver will have a nice little ring.

Tried that. They are both silver. Still can't explain the different edge reeding.

Looked into this a while ago. All of the previous comments are correct from my research in the past. Personally think you're looking at the same dime just the one on the right has more wear

Good evening

Yes, there are silver coins that were minted in Philadelphia.
