A relatively recent one is the 1999 Voyager 25 Cents With ROPE (or line on the canoe). One (in about MS63?) just traded for $25 USD (including shipping). That's $30 Canadian. This coin was available months earlier for much much less. Here's the URL:

After just 2 weeks, the price has now crashed on this variety:

Now down to $13.50 US with shipping charges included (or about $16.90 CDN). That's a drop of about 44% in just two weeks. Welcome to the world of varieties.

Yep, even lower. Now at $1.00. With shipping - $3.00 US or about $3.75 CDN. That's a drop in price of about 87%. And this is the reality of the market. How do you price it? With a price that's all over the place. Yet these are real trades. If you say its worth $3.37 CDN the person who paid $30.00 CDN (as in the first trade) will say your price is too low. If you say its worth $30.00 , there will be folks saying the price is too high. If you say its worth the average of these two trades, everyone will say your price is way out. And yet this sort of thing happens all the time... its by no means a rare occurance...

I haven't received the coin for a dollar yet, it may be a stock photo and it may be a regular coin.

Here's another one.Guess the scarcity and desirability of this variety hasn't been established by the market yet,as prices seem to rise and fall.[/url] http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0318437308

Yep, prices are all over the place. This was a good exercise to illustrate the dynamics of the market - especially for varieties. But something similar can even occur for mainstream coins. It seems that few collectors are aware of this. If you take the average of all the trades of this coin and use them to set a price, then you can be sure someone will come along and say the price is way out because I can get one for way less. Or, someone will come along and say the price is way out because one recently traded for much more.
