Post by GBELEC » Sun Feb 09, 2020 8:52 pm

I’ve been looking on eBay and see a Canadian 1945-2010 quarter that they claim is missing its color , has anyone ever heard of this error?? I’m sceptical that the color was just removed. Just wondering if anyone has info regarding this as a error ??? Seller has %100 positive feed back so would not what to get anyone mad at me :(

Starting in the late 90's, the RCM (and other mints) promotional departments started their insane "let's make some new ceremonial coins". Especially the quarters where the play was ruthless. They commemorated everything on the planet earth or anything historical. They produced multilayer, multiplyed, multi-alloyed coins from the 3 different mints(Philadelphia even got into the game for the RCM). As such, there is a mishmash of 25 cent coins around that the mint can fool people into buying. Early into the 2000's, they started adding color to some of the coins to highlight the design. It usually took less than a year for the color to wear/flake off naturally ... or you could do it in a few minutes with the right chemical. Pay no attention to coins with no color ... the color is either down the drain or flakes of it are in people's pockets.

Good evening GBELEC

Look at the study I did on the color and knurling to hold the paint on all Canadian parts.

It's in French and you can translate into English.

How do you translate it into English? And that thread does not appear to be on numicanada so I can't use the translation on the site. What does it say in a sentence or two?

Google Translate came up with—-

Top and bottom of the color for circulation coins 2004 to 2018
By beaver | Monday January 28, 2019

Since 2004 the Royal Canadian Mint has issued 19 coins with color patterns for the circulation currency of different denominations.

This study is not intended to be technical or scientific, but only to share information and observations from a collector who wanted to know more about how it is done. By studying the underside of the color we can follow through the change of the years, the evolution of the application of the color, probably so that it stays in place.

For the years when there is the issue of a coin without color and another with color, but which have the same themes and patterns, there are two different reverse product corners for striking each of these. On the other hand, there are often good modifications in the presentation of these due to the fact that they will receive the color.

Each of the pieces that were produced with color is presented in this study. For years where there are things to note, this will be indicated. Before we go below the color, there are things we can see above.

Color top

By examining the set of setbacks from 2004 to 2011, we can see an overflow that is not color and that is transparent like varnish. As of 2012, I did not see any of these overflow marks. There have been changes in the way of applying color from 2015. This will be mentioned on this date.

Here are four examples among others where we can see these transparent marks that spill over from the color itself and that you have probably already seen. These shadows have somewhat all kinds of more or less defined forms.

The tops being seen, the rest will focus on the different kinds of knurling that there are under the colors.

Below the color

As the subject of this study is what is under the color, only the reverse side will be presented. The photos have been cut to present only the colored part of each one, as well as the bottom of this one. Close-ups of the knurling are made at a magnification of about 200X.

Note: Special attention will be paid to the 2010 souvenir coin for the engraving of the patterns, which is unique for a Canadian circulation coin.

25 cents 2004 - Poppy Remembrance Day

25 cents 2006 - Breast cancer

25 cents 2008 - Poppy Remembrance Day

25 cents 2009 - Men's hockey

25 cents 2009 - Women's hockey

25 cents 2009 - Cindy Klassen

25 cents 2010 - Poppy Remembrance Day

25 cents 2011 - Legendary Nature Series

25 cents 2012-2013 - Hero series from the War of 1812

25 cents 2015 - 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag

25 cents 2015 - Poppy Remembrance Day

25 cents 2017 - For the future of the environment

2 dollars 2017 - Dance of the Spirits

2 dollars 2018 - 100th Anniversary of the Armistice of 1918

Synthesis of knurling from 2004 to 2018

In conclusion and this without any judgment of the Royal Canadian Mint on my part, it is difficult to understand and conclude that from 2004 to 2018, the ideal knurling for painting was found.

As you can see in the photo of the knurling synthesis, there are not many years where we find the same configuration and approximate size of the knurling points.

It's up to you to conclude from your reading. The year 2018 ends this study for the moment while waiting for the next colored circulation coins.

Thanks for reading.
