2007 -08 painted quarter mule

Post by GlenG » Mon Dec 09, 2024 1:45 am

I've been trying to find a value of the Petro Can 2007 Alpine Skiing painted quarter. This coin has 2008 instead of 2007. Sorry no pics of it because it's still in original packaging so looking at it thru the plastic wouldn't do any justice, but has never been opened so I'm reluctant to open it. Maybe I should send it to ICCS? Any thoughts of value?

First of all, do not send it in to be graded. The TPG would have to remove it from the set to grade it.
Second, this is one of those rare cases where the mule set is worth less than the regular quarter set.
The mule can only be found in the Petro Canada sets and a few special sets. There were over 40,000
sets produced with the mule quarter and only about 900 sets produced with the proper quarter making
it harder to find and more valuable.
There is a set of none mule on eBay for $490.00 and you can buy the mule set for about $8.00.

Your info is different than mine
Date Mintage VG F VF XF AU UNC Frequency
2007 40 470 Issued in collector card 2007
2008 919 14 Mule, issued in collector card 2007
this came from: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces69207.html
Any chance you might have the mintages mixed up?

No, Numista is wrong, they have it reversed.
My info is from a couple of different reliable sources, besides, why would the regular
quarter be selling for $490.00 and the mule for $8.00 if the mule was the more rare.

One Source
"Instead of the proper 2007 obverse die, a 2008 obverse die was used to strike approximately 40,000 coins.
The strange fact regarding this mule: The 2008 dated coins fit the definition of a "mule" coin.
HOWEVER, since only approximately 900 coins were produced with the correct 2007 date, and over 40,000 coins were produced with the wrong date the mule coins SHOULD be less valuable than the correct ones."

Thanks for setting me straight about the mintage. Had in my head that a "mule" was always more valuable. Are there any other mules like this?
