1994 50 cent - Dot in "G"

Post by rick.page » Thu Jan 10, 2019 1:49 pm

I now have 3 1994 50 cent pieces with a dot in the G of 'D.G." I can't find any reference to this type anywhere. Has anyone else seen this variety?

The “Dot in the G” has been recognized for quite a few years but has never gained much popularity. It is a die chip and is catalogued as a variety in the 1994 listing on this website. Of interest is the doubling on the denticles and lettering visible on the photo.... if it is not a trick of the lighting, but is evident on the coin itself it is probably a result of “Flat field doubling” which can be seen on the nickel dollars and fifty cents of this era.
