The November 1999 CNA Journal had an article on the missing or partially missing letters on the early Nickle 50c coins. The missing ‘A’ in’AD’ on the motto below the shield on the Reverse was the most common (and your coin is a good example) and it can be found missing on some 1968, 1969 and 1976 50c coins. Sometimes the ‘I’ in ‘MARI’ is missing and sometimes the whole ‘AD’ is missing.

your information is always interesting. My coin not only has the A missing but most of the I in mari is missing and half of the U in usque. I didn't include pictures because I didn't think it important. Thanks.
