1898 Canada 50 cents different 9s

Post by Piepala80 » Thu Oct 01, 2020 3:02 pm

Hello. I just found a weird 1898 50 cent Canada piece with an odd 9. I’ve notice other 1898 with two difference 9s. Skinny and fat. Mine looks like it has an elephant’s truck. Has anyone ever seen one like mine and why aren’t the other punch 9 recognize. I took photos of coins on eBay. Let me know. Thanks

That is not an error or variety, it is damage. Something has hit the nine and pushed the metal over creating that effect.

That’s what I thought but the obverse side has no sign of a push out. (Bump)

It wasn't hit hard enough to push through to the other side, just hard enough to displace the metal.
Look at the 0 in 50, it is a similar situation.

Looks like maybe the die was damaged and looks like it tried to make a 0

Great coin! :D

The 9 is obviously PMD. But any half dollar from 1870 to 1936 is a great piece imo! 8)
