1890 50 cent coin

Post by Mattek » Tue Apr 27, 2021 8:40 pm

Took this coin to a local coin shop and the guy said i should send it to a place in toronto to have it certified. He said even if he bought it off me people wouldn't believe him that he had such a coin and thats its worth was much more than what i had determined from the charts here on this website.

Can anyone help shed some light on what i have here? If pictures are needed i will provide.

Welcome to the CCF

What you have is a valuable coin but the true value will depend on condition.
Post a clear picture of both sides showing the detail so that we can help with grade.
Your coin shop was right, it should be certified.

Yes, show us some pics and then send it to ICCS in T.O. if you plan on keeping it up here or offer for local sale.

Ill take some pics when i get home. Until i get pics uploaded though, it looks to me to be AG3.

The value for AG3 stated here on the website is significantly lower than what the gentleman at the coin shop said it was worth. Which leaves me confused.

Obviously the best course of action is to send it to iccs in Toronto, but I'm still very curious and am hoping i can clear up my confusion a little bit once i post the pictures.

Would love to see pictures. If your plan is to sell it then having it graded could be worth it. If the grade is on the high end I hope you have a good place to store it as in a Safety deposit box.

I have looked through two different catalogues that have a G4 certified 1890 fifty cent piece valued at $1000,00.
They do not have a listing for a G-3 so it would probably be worth around $700.00 if you got it certified.
Don’t know how much the coin shop valued it at but it couldn’t be much more than that.

Sorry fellas i forgot to upload pics. Im on midnights this week and im all messed up schedule wise.

Its pretty much identical to the one in the last ebay link there though.

And yea the guy at the coin shop was talking significantly more than the selling prices there so im not sure hes as adept as he would like to claim. Lol.

Im setting a reminder to upload pics so check back here in about 3 hours.

I feel comfortable to assess that your « Vicky fifty » is AG-3. I have some In different grades and it looks the same than One of them, except for the reverse, which is limit Fr-2. One could say that 1890H has been struck with convex reverse die; that makes worn rims and clear date
