1986 SP 50c scar face

Post by 2bits » Fri Dec 01, 2023 10:10 pm

Recently acquired 1986 SP 50 cent piece that exhibits a scar across the face of the Queen.
I have added several photos of the coin with one under magnification.
Your thought are much appreciated.

I’ve added another magnified view,

Hard to tell from small photo but it is either a small die crack or a scratch.
If it is raised, it is a die crack, if incuse, it is a scratch.

Because it's on the highest point of relief on the Obverse, I'd say a scartch. You don't get die-cracks deep into the recess of the die very often and there is really no start or end to the line.

Not a SP (specimen) coin, it's PR (proof)
A scratch would destroy any numismatic value

With the larger photo, I would have to say that it is a scratch on the frosting preventing it from a high grade.
Agree that it is a PL, not a SP. A 1986 Specimen would be Brilliant Relief on a Brilliant Background.

Thanks for clarifying the status, I agree that it is a Proof.
Regarding the scar, I’m not sure it’s a scratch as the pics show branching (running up the cheek near the nose and down, near the back of the jaw).
Your thoughts are as always, welcome!
