1969 C on the Canoe

Post by Enyaw » Mon Jan 23, 2023 9:05 pm

I examined a number of 1969 dollar coins this weekend and I found four coins that seem to have the letter C on the canoe in the exact same location and orientation. It is exactly the same on each coin so I have ruled out post mint damage. It is very subtle but when the light hits it right it shows up on the coin. I thought maybe struck through grease or something but I would welcome thoughts. Thanks.

The extra embellishment on the canoe does not seem to be like a typical grease mark, but looks more like a post mint stamp of some sort, or intentional damage. Unless some of the coins are MS, perhaps you managed to just get a few that someone had played with to see if they ever got them back again.

Thanks for the feedback.
I went through all 120 coins again and found another 5 (9 total) with this exact feature. I'm thinking it must be struck through scrap because all 9 coins have the "c" in the exact same location and "subtle strike". If it were added after the minting process the likelihood of the "c" looking identical and being in the exact location on all 9 coins is almost impossible. For example, the few 1970 GAN counter stamped dollar coins that I have seen all have differences in placement, depth etc. caused my human variation.
