I found this 1982 voyageur "patched canoe" coin that is missing chrome plating similar to the 1986 variety.

Can't be missing plating, these coins are not plated, they are solid nickel.

I guess the Coins and Canada website is wrong then?

And the Charlton 67th Edition?

I’m not really into Nickel Dollars but I can’t see how it could be missing Chrome Plating when there is no chrome on a Nickel Dollar.
Is it possible that it is a lamination problem that can occur on solid alloys.

From the photos, those 2 areas looked "raised" not recessed to what a missing chrome would be. Since they made a different coin in '82-83, other than the commemorative, with the old voyageur Reverse, maybe they had some different planchets. Are those areas really raised and not recessed?

Maybe we should get Roger involved with this one, he's the Nickel Dollar expert.

Thanks for your help in trying to figure this out. I have attached photos of the 1986 "patched canoe" using the same microscope and lighting as an example. In my opinion they have the same "texture".

Looking closer at this (as I said, I'm not into nickel dollars), perhaps when they say "missing chrome", they
are referring to the striking dies which have a chrome plating. If a part of this fell off somehow, it would
leave a small raised area on the coin. This would cause multiple coins to have the same appearance.

I do believe this is more likely... losing the top layer would not be of interest, but adding to it would be!

The dies are missing the chrome plating, not the coins. It chips or flakes off as the dies deteriorate. Therefore, the features appear raised on the coins.

This is the same phenomena as what Hans Zoell used to call "mortar set".
