Hi there, I got this toonie in a large coin purchase on eBay. It was from a dealer in the US and he had never sold to a Canadian before so he sent it as a special gift. I’m posting it here because I cannot find any information on anything similar and am seeing what people’s thoughts are on it.

That Toonie is not an error, it is damage. Looks like someone tried to clean it with steel wool or other abrasive.
It is still worth two dollars though, so not a bad gift.

I do agree it was cleaned. 90% of the coins I got in that lot were cleaned. I was very annoyed but that’s not what I’m asking about.
I’m asking about the what looks like a die crack that goes all the way around the outer ring. It doesn’t look like cleaning damage.

I can see why you may think that a vending machine may have done this but...
There would be more actual scrapes around the damage looking areas and the coin doesn’t look anything like the one in the link provided
I think this is pre mint damage as it is layered in places. Also, the 8 of the date the damage is beside on both sides and the middle of the 8 but only visible on one the right edge not the left. The same with Elizabeth and Regina.
I included a few more close up photos. Look at that weird circle in the L of Elizabeth and then the jagged crack below it.
Once again, it is unfortunate that it has been cleaned but I find the other damage very interesting.

It could be acid damage. If a diluted solution of nitric acid were used for cleaning, it would dissolve the outer nickel ring, while leaving the inner aluminum core relatively unaffected. Dripping or brushing the acid onto the middle of the coin until it’s halfway to the outer ring and then left for a bit, could cause the damage you see. I have never done this myself, so just my guess as to the cause.
