2012 HMS Shannon Obverse

Has any one else run into this? It looks to me like the plating has rubbed off and it is starting to rust.

That's what I thought too, but can't figure out the rust. I think I will try a little alcohol on it.

It can't be rust showing. Those cores are made of brass plated aluminum bronze, neither of which can rust.
It just must be the chemical reaction.
