Straight clipped planchet?
Straight clipped planchet?
Someone at the grocery store had someone pay with this, I noticed it on top of the till and swapped it out with cash of my own. What do you guys think?

Re: Straight clipped planchet?
Not a clip.
Re: Straight clipped planchet?
I agree
That has been done after it left the mint.
Just a damaged Toonie.

Re: Straight clipped planchet?
Looks like a legitimate straight clip to me.
This can happen when the sheet being punched out for planchets goes off course and the edge is punched out, leaving a straight edge.

Re: Straight clipped planchet?
A clip that size should show a Blakesley effect. There is no sign of even the slightest one.
Re: Straight clipped planchet?
The Blakesley Effect is often absent in the case of large clips. Because the dies impact is concentrated on a much smaller piece of metal, boosting the effecting striking pressure. This increased pressure overcomes the lack of a proto-rim and generates a normal design rim.

Re: Straight clipped planchet?
I think it's post-mint that something sliced it. I see no indication of anything disfiguring any part of the T & H in Elizabeth or the S in dollars. I think that there would be a bulge there with nothing holding back the metal from flowing.

I don't even think that it is PMD.
The clipped part has been ground to give a smooth finish. Mint damage would be a sharp break.
