Corrosion VS grade

Post by CalicoJack » Fri Oct 28, 2022 8:45 am

Hey all, I am finally going to put out a question I have wavered over for years when assigning coins to my collection, or for grading, sell, or the cull pile.
Corrosion / rust.
Many times, I come across sweet coins that have some amount of rust or corrosion and I always wonder... does this go from MS64 to AU... or garbage?
I have seen coins come from mint rolls with corrosion, that have never seen the light of day... are they now simply cull coins?
Anyway... I will post a couple pictures of some coins that might grade one way based on wear, and another based on corrosion?
Let talk about this... my cull pile would be much smaller if corrosion or rust was deemed acceptable in the grading world. I know bag marks, and certain small scratches are passable between grades, but let me know your thoughts on this.
Cheers!

I have been collecting for 70 years and inherited about 800 pennies. I have finally decided to catalogue my collection. You know, I have often wondered this same question. We must be awful dumb on this subject that nobody wants to answer us or it is so obvious. I would have thought there are tons of us out there that would like to know. Anyway, I feel for all of us that don't know.

This used to be a fairly active forum, but the site kept dropping off the line for the last month or two. IT was down all the time, so I guess people stopped trying to get in. It looks like they have fixed whatever the problem was. I would guess that it was scammers or hackers that were trying to get in. Stay aboard and maybe folks will come back. If that 1932 cent just above us is yours, it isn't much, even if it had no corrosion. Drop it in some acetone for a bit and the green will come off. Depending on how long it was on/in the coin, it will leave a very dark spot where the green was.

I notice that in this forum many posts may not get a response unless it is specifically about a grade opinion or value. (or obvious ridiculousness). I suppose it's due to the overwhelming repetition of questions that get answered over and over. There seems to be a handful of truly helpful people on here that do generally respond, but a posts gets seen 500 plus times and no one but the aforementioned handful of people ever seem to respond. Seems like a lot of knowledge out there is laying low. I try and search the forum for my answers before I ask a question, and my questions are generally things I need to add to my knowledge base... sadly, my education on corrosion is still in limbo. One takeaway I have received on this forum is that a coin will still grade as MS, or whatever it may be, but with "conditions" on the grade if corroded. Baby steps.

Unless a key or rare coin, it is mostly garbage imo
