I actually truly wonder who is authenticating/grading these coins.

Are they immigrant hires that get a one week crash course in grading and get paid poorly to maximize profit? Not only is is not an AU53 but look at coin carefully. Hint: Look at GRATIA and obviously the reverse leaves.

Pathetic

I've actually never seen a coin grade AU-53 and I've seen thousands. NGC is not noted for their grading prowess. I'd inspect the slab carefully and see if the coin itself has been changed. I think that the coin isn't much above XF-40. It's also marked wrong. It is a small leaves, small date Obv 3. ALL small leaves are small dates, just like this one. He'll be lucky to get $50-60 US for it

I have an NGC AU53 1898 50 Cents that I purchased 16 years ago. Its only an EF45, which I suspected it was anyway before I bought it. I removed it from its slab the same day I got it in hand. Its a stupid grade designation anyway. For this particular 1891 the T in GRATIA is re-punched with the 1871 PEI ' T ' - with long serifs.

Well, then, he may very well GET the $200+ US for it if someone sees the scarce variety. It's in the 2011 Charlton on p 330. I sent the seller an email telling him his post was wrong, not including the very generous grade from a 2nd tier TPG (for Canadian Cents, since other foreign is sometimes good). I let him know that it was an Obv 3 SD/SL.

I was going to as well but decided to wait until other members had a chance to view the listing and perhaps comment.

NGC is not my preferred grading Company for Canadian coins there are lots out graded wrong and many cleaned coins with no mention. Not sure how they grade US coins or other Countries but for Canadian coins no thanks
