My father passed and I got some 30 new Canadian cents
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I was told they are worth about $5 American

Welcome to the forum

Value would depend on condition so we will have to see a picture of the obverses to determine that.
They are all fairly common so unless they are high grade, I don’t see them being worth much more than about 50 cents each Canadian.

Please check here - it sounded like you have more than the few shown in the image.
These look like they are in press in cardboard holders, and the back is usually not seen. Final value is determined by reviewing both sides. The link has info on what you can look for.
