1973 $1 Prefix ALE - Missing Prefix?

Post by q60driver » Fri Jun 23, 2023 2:36 pm

I'm wondering if the experts can help me with this.

I collect 1973 $1 prefixes and I have found a discrepancy between the list of prefixes on this website and the Charlton books. As you can see below, the website shows prefix ALE exists. Charlton shows it does not.

Does anyone have any insight to this or have any of you seen this prefix on a note? It just seems odd that they would skip a letter (I do know they skip I, O, and Q).

I'm missing 2 prefixes in my whole collection but I may be missing 3 if ALE exists...

Looks like a typo in Charlton.
Notice that all the other prefixes include the E

I had that thought as well. I went through the last 3 Charlton books and they all say the same thing.

I'm going to contact the editor to let them know or to see if they have a reason for it but I believe you are correct.

There are errors in the coin catalogue as well that have been in there for years so it is not uncommon.

TYPO: IMO. We see & report these discrepancies all the time.

Just read BWJM's post that the "ALE" prefix doesn't exist. If he states the prefix doesn't exist then I would believe him (they've skipped prefixes before & BWJM knows his stuff). Apologies for my incorrect assumption. I also agree with his summary of the other scarce replacements. Good luck!
