1936 Specimen 5 Cents
1936 Specimen 5 Cents
I have a question regarding the value of a coin I just purchased. It is a 1936 Five Cent that has been certified by ICCS in SP-40 condition. The price guide on this web site does not list anything below SP-63, and I could not find any recent sales of this coin in similar condition. I quite possibly have the lowest graded certified example. PCGS has only certified 3 examples that are all significantly nicer at SP-65, SP-67, and SP-67+. I have no idea what the population is from ICCS or the other major coin grading services. ChatGPT seems to think that there are less than 10 certified coins in SP, but it likely just got its opinion from the PCGS website. In any event, I bought the coin for a price that I am more than comfortable with. All I can find online is that less than 200 specimen sets were struck in 1936. At the very least I have a coin with a very limited mintage. Having said that, any idea of approximate value?
Re: 1936 Specimen 5 Cents
Very hard question to answer.
As you say, they are fairly rare certified as someone would have to break up
the set to certify it. As you probably know, they are are four figure coin in
MS condition. The fact you have one that has been circulated would greatly
bring down the value as it would be classed as “ impaired”. The only value
that I could give you is whatever you paid for it. There is nothing else to go by.

Thank you for the quick reply. I feared as much - that there is no basis for determination. Again, I am more than happy to have acquired a coin of such rarity despite an impaired designation. And, as a collector (my wife might say "hoarder") I have no interest in selling - but my curiosity got the best of me.

I just thought to share photos of the coin in case anybody was interested

Wow! From the vertical jewels in the crown and garland, it looks like wear. Is the coin in the specimen case?

No, the coin is completely autonomous aside from the ICCS holder. I am sure that there is a good story behind this coin - I wish I knew more about it (while I am at it, I wish I had the other coins in the set as well).
