I am looking for a small storage box for coins and papers that would protect from fire. Any suggestions?

fireproof box for coins and papers
Re: fireproof box for coins and papers
Hi Joe100,
I did search a few years back. One of the best that I found is:
Sentry Safe
Fire safe/Waterproof NOTE: a fire safes have different limitations. This one is good for it's size and cost.
Model H2300
approx 15" x 14 1/2" x 7 1/2" exterior and approx 12 3/4" x 9 1/2" x 5 1/4" inside.
It easily holds a large number of the 20 slot plastic sheets for 2 x 2 mounted coins or you can just put in loose notes and/or coins .
It is available at Staples.
When I bought mine they were $69.95 plus GST (no Prov Tax in Alberta). That was a few years back so they may have gone up a few dollars since then.
I looked at a number of different sizes, however for my purposes this was perfect. Naturally it is heavy but can be carried around if you need to do so. The bigger ones were too heavy to carry if loaded.
The smaller mini safes didn't have the same features.
Good luck

You can store part of your collection at your bank.
Or use diversion safes.

Don't know if that would protect from fire.

If all you want is a fireproof box you can build one SUPER cheap .... (this would not be a SAFE though)
-get some galvanized 90 degree brackets from the hardware store.... cut to the height and width and depth dimensions you'd like... for exterior use concrete fiberboard (the stuff used for tiling) then wrap in Al foil. Middle layer of 1/2 inch drywall and finally an exterior layer of concrete board again...
That will give you a really good box with a VERY high fire rating.... most of these materials you could also pick up for free if you know of people doing demo work, or do the whole thing under $100 if the dimensions use less than one sheet of concrete board
