Adjustable Platform for coin photography
Adjustable Platform for coin photography
Here is a tip-tilt platform I recently developed. Nothing very complicated, but it helps a lot for taking pictures of your favorite coin errors.
The platform allows to tilt your coin in any angle over +/- 45 degrees.
You can now optimize the rendering of the feature you want to highlight.
Cost: 16$ including shipping in Canada.
The set includes 2 inserts to accommodate various coin sizes.
Just send me a private message if you are interested to get a set or need more information.

Most of you know that it's not always easy to put in evidence the beauty of our coins or specific errors. We can obviously play around with the projection angle of the light source, but in many cases, this is not enough.
The additional trick is to adjust the coin's viewing angle (tilt) with the camera. Unfortunately, most of the time our setup makes it difficult to tilt the coin to large angles, unless you tweak temporary supports that may not be stable or ergonomic.
This new platform is based on a hemisphere sitting over a 3-point base. This configuration allows the angle of the sphere to be adjusted in all directions. The flat side of the hemisphere contains a series of rings adjusted to Canadian coin sizes, from 1 cent to 1 $ silver. A raised border keeps the coin safely in place. A set of inserts allow various coins size.
This small tip-tilt base is easy to use and very practical. I'm using it almost every day now, in combination with my Celestron USB microscope.
This picture shows the rendering improvment. The left side is based on conventional lighning from the microscope. The clash is barely seen. The middle picture is taken with an external light. Some improvment, but not the best. The right image has been optimize by tilting the coin to get the best contrast on the clash.

Re: Adjustable Platform for coin photography
I just completed the manufacturing of a new batch of this tip/tilt mount.
The price is still 16$, including shipping.
It's a very useful tool for coin photography. You can safely adjust the coin angle with respect to the camera to maximize the image quality and contrast without manipulating directly the coin.
For example, many of you know that Die Clashes are especially tough to grab pictures. With this new adjustment you can easily increase the clash mark contrast for your own reference database or for coin selling.
Just contact me you you need more information.

Re: Adjustable Platform for coin photography
please, be aware that top photographers have no problem taking great pictures in most lighting conditions.
AND that images of coins should always be taken at an exact 90-degree angel from the top.
I have never needed any widgets when using a macro lens.

You're right for top photographers, but most collectors have little experience with macro photography, and this widget, as you called it, is quite usefull for them.
And you're also right that's better to grab the "full" coin at 90 degrees.
But for error documentation with close up pictures, the rendering is sometime better by tilting the coins, and this is where this tool is useful.
This widget is just an additional tool in your box.
Re: Adjustable Platform for coin photography
Thanks for your interest Bruce. I sent you email.
For the others, I still have few sets in stock.
The price for Canada is now 21$ including shipping.
I have added two extra disks to accomodate other canadian diameters that were not included in the first version.
Just send me a private message for those interested.
