1859 N9 - Another Possible DP9 ? What do you think ?

Post by Radius88 » Thu Aug 20, 2020 2:22 pm

Hello, Here is yet another 1859 N9 example that I have that is also not noted in the varieties of DP9 listed. Does it look like it is a DP9 or again, something else caused by damage or metal flake off ? Opinions please. And Thanks again.

Can you post a picture of the Reverse and Obverse sides of the coin, it looks like a 1859 W9/8

I believe your coin is described in Rob Turners Book ( The 1858 Cents of Provincial Canada ) volume 2 as Die pair RD4 - OH1.

Thanks so much for the information. I actually went online to try and order Jim's new Vol 2, but site was not accepting paykents yet, so will try back later. In the meantime, is there information about the population or scarcity of this die pair ? And Cheers for the book reference. Bill (Radius88)

Radius88, this die pair I believe to be RD4 - 0H1 by the picture provided and if it is this pair RD4 reverse was used on 24% of over-dated cents, the 0H1 Obverse was used on 22% of over-dated cents making it the second most common die marriage used to mint the 1859 over-dated cents.

I know Rob Turner and Bill Hall and highly respect both who were the main spearheads of the 2011 Charlton Canadian coins 65th edition and was excited that they let me tag along with them in helping gather info on varieties that were added into the back of the 65th edition. Since then several varieties have moved to the front pages of the book. I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to be involved with putting the 2011, 65th edition together.

I never helped Rob or Bill since but correspond off and on with them through e-mails on variety coins, I have known both for several years though e-mails and coin web sites but I have never met Bill personally but hope to soon, I met Rob in person at the Calgary Canadian National Coin Show in 2019 where I also met some other well know coin experts.
If you go to Victoria Cents of Canada that is Rob Turners web site you can order any of his books but the last one he published you will have to go to order from the RCNA for your order as Rob donated the book for them to sell

Fantastic Jim, I'll go to his site. Thank you for the background and those details. I'm almost retired and have collected since a kid and put away a hoard of coins from over 50+ years etc) and now have the time to "curate" what I have but more important is to learn and do some deep dives into my interests, and Canadian Cents and Provincials and Tokens with all varieties have "captured me" . I hope to meet you and Rob and Bill at some point also, as I sit close to Canada on former Confederate Officer Civil War Union Prison Camp ground, on Johnson's Island just a quick 40 minute boat ride to Canadian waters and a bit more to Pele'. Jim J ... You are hiding behind a new name for this site. I always loved your old name/moniker. Yes, Jim J helped us with the 2011 Charlton after a good friend of mine, Brad Gravestone (Mr 1859) had to withdraw. Rob actually has 5 books out now and I've helped with the first 4, sometimes just to loan him piles of coins, since I'm a hoarder. At one time, I had over 1100 1859's and another 80 or so 9/8's. If you send me a private email to syl.bil@sympatico.ca, I've got a great story about Johnson's Island from my time in the service (31 years).

Radius88, I never new of your Island where you live.

I googled it and read a bit of the history of Johnson's Island very interesting and a special place in time, I love history its the book of our World and how we have developed through time as people. It must be a good place to live your away from all the big city life small town atmosphere but also close to the big city lights.
I hope you enjoy your retirement and collecting + studies of the Canadian large cents / tokens

Hello again, I just received Rob Turner's books (2nd Edition of Vol 11, and the 1890-H and 1892 Die studies.) Fantastic work. Details and stats right out of the most comprehensive study the most accomplished Actuarial Sciences professional would be proud to have done. Fabulous pictures and works that have made him and his works immortal. And thanks for your help and coins and input for the projects (Bill & Jim) Radius88 (Bill)

You will have some enjoyable reading ahead of you Bill, with lots of key makers to watch for mentioned in the books of said years with excellent pictures for your reference of those coins. You will have a bit of an edge on others when looking for varieties with gained knowledge from books.
