1882 H Obv. 1 double die variation
I may have an 1882 H obv. 1 double die variation. The doubling is not as pronounced and minimal in "CAN" compared to the traditional double die. I am not sure if it is die doubling or mechanical doubling. NGC graded the coin AU details, obverse scratch. Does anyone have information on this coin?

To bad it’s a detailed coin. I think it’s a c1 over c2. It’s a type 2 variety with doubled denticle. Someone will come along to confirm
Re: 1882 H Obv. 1 double die variation
Sammeli is correct this coin is one of the 2 over 1 type coins its not listed in any coin trends and wont get a DDO from any grading companies, but is just as hard if not harder to find than the 2/1 DDO its a keeper.
The marker for this coin is the double denticles from the second A in Canada to the I in Victoria

My computer has been down so I couldn't comment. Yep, it's a 2/1 type 2.

Thanks for the info.
The attached picture just barely shows the 2/1. To bad about the gouge.
So it's punch doubling. Akin to machine doubling and strike doubling. Not die doubling.
What is a good auction site for Canadian coins?

I am trying to sell the coin discussed in this thread.
An expert said, "this coin is one of the 2 over 1 type coins its not listed in any coin trends and wont get a DDO from any grading companies, but is just as hard if not harder to find than the 2/1 DDO"
If it's not listed anywhere or recognized as a variety by a grading service, how would anyone know it is a rare coin?
It's a conundrum.

Re: 1882 H Obv. 1 double die variation
I think that this is the same coin (or example of) the '82 2/1 with heavy punch doubling in the 2011, 65th edition of Charlton on p314. There were 3 different slightly different strikes with minor differences, but this is slightly different because of the doubled denticles at 6 tp 8:00 on the Rev and it has a few fewer letters doubled. We could only put one of the 3 types in there and we listed the one that we published at $300 in VG and $600 at VF-20. Both ICCS and Trends listed our coin and published as a variety, but that's where it ended. The coin is just as hard to find as the "heavy punch doubling", although there IS some MD in addition to the RP's. The bad ding on the 1 will drive it down. Try to contact someone from the archives who joined in the discussions about the '82 2/1's with doubling.

Re: 1882 H Obv. 1 double die variation
And remember that the "2/1" designation means Obv 2 over Obv 1 for the Monarch portrait. Obv 1 has the smooth rounded neck/chin with neither the crown tip or the neck point impinging on the nead. The Obv 2 has the dimpled/creased neck and the neck tip ends to the right of the bead, between the 2 and the crown tip touches. the "2/1" DOES NOT mean 1882/1881. The mint took an 1881 Obv 1 or 1a die and overpunched it (carefully aligning) with the newly made Obv 2 master updated portrait. Since the smooth rounded neck/chin of the Obv 1, was physically bigger than the new neck/chin, none of the creases/dimple show through on the neck on the 2/1's. It is an Obv 2 over Obv 1 and not the other way around.
