coinsandcanada.com price guide

Post by KEN66 » Thu May 12, 2022 2:53 pm

I was checking the price guide for Canada proof like coins. Is there a error in the listing for a 1988 PL nickel graded PL67 for $92.00 also a 1998 one cent PL67 listed at $85.00 I checked all my sets and they are PL67 or better. Are the listings right? Thank you for any response.

Don't believe what you see in CaC. Check Ebay sold prices. Only use CaC as one of 3-4 references. They look like "dreamer" prices.

The problem isn't the price guide as much as your assessment of your own coins, less than one in a thousand will grade pl67. There are years for some denominations for which no coins have been graded PL67.

No 1998 cent NBU/PL-67 on ebay which means it's kind of scarce

Just because there are no coins listed with that exact title, does not mean that it's scarce. It may be so cheap that it's not worth spending the money to get it certified. For most coins, it needs to be worth (what someone would pay, not a book price) at least $100. It you have a 1998 cent that will actually grade 67, then you can use these Ebay "sold" entries to estimate what yours may be worth. By the way, collectors NOW poopah the term PL, since the mint has made none of those for decades. Your coin would be MS and a circulation strike and doubt that it would be worth over $10 Canadian, even at 67..

I'll repeat myself.. kind of scarce. You can't find one on ebay or most on most of the CAN auctioneers archives in the past 10 years. Not enough avalaible/certified for collectors, price is up. Doesn't mean they don't exist in uncracked sets all around. Pcgs certified some examples PL-68.

From what I have heard, the top tier TPG's do not use or recognize the term proof-like or the PL designation. The mint also does not use the term or designation of "proof-like".

There was a lengthy discussion on here. Take it for what it is worth:

Not quite true, PCGS, NGC, ICCS and CCCS all use the PL designation, they just don't all include the same years.

Yes, the mint had PL until1967/8 from what I have read. However, the TPG's don't stop at that year, even those 3-4 that are thought of as top tier. And collectors and Ebay vendors or auctioneers misuse the term daily for the benefit of nice-sounding words. Many people buy "words" and "numbers" rather than the coin since it makes them feel good. Charlton continued to use the term in their books but also states that the term "proof like" just refers to the finish and nothing else. They are made no different than circulation strikes, although maybe a little earlier in the die life.

The RCM would say that they have never had PL sets, just uncirculated BU sets. There may have been some sets around 53 that had a mix, as there was less intention to sell them the way they have been since. There seems to be some that have a better cameo effect, but RCM people flat out say there has never been PL sets. Its a result of a book assessment that just held on, and a look that can sometimes resemble what the US coins have as a true category.
