NBU (Brilliant uncirculated): Coins not intended for circulation struck and sold by the Mint in a special package despite the fact that their composition is identical to the coins produced for circulation. Starting in 1977, third party grading companies, among other references, started to replace PL term by NBU. If these coins have been removed from their protective envelope or original package, it is harder to differentiate them from circulated coins.

The Nunavut toonies were struck in base metals (for circulation) and in precious metals (for collectors). These coins differ on the reverse. The base metal coins have a raised rim there where ring and insert meet. In case of the precious metal coins, this raised rim is absent. However, inadvertently, some of the coins struck in base metals (for the uncirculated sets; an estimated 3000 coins) were struck with a reverse die intended for precious metal coins.
