These pieces were made as jewellery. Some pieces are dated 1849 because it was an important date for the American west. The use of such other symbols as an eagle, a plains Indian rather than a coast Indian, a Liberty head, and a striped shield are also more clearly American than Canadian. Most pieces dated 1912 through 1926 were originally produced in the year indicated.
