1899 9/9 dime A.U.
1899 9/9 dime A.U.
Hello forum. I just picked up an 1899 dime in what I would call AU as it has all the details if BU yet some obvious wear on her cheek. The date is 1899 and as I was researching I found your site. It lists the large and small nines and after close examination, it is the smaller 9’s. However the second 9 has a bit of a protruding defender beneath the bottom left side of the curve. Nice luster on this coin. And all the details in the Queen’s hair. And 3-4 distinct segments in the leaf/wave in front of her ear.
I cannot find much on the doubled 9 other than this site. Can you help me determine if that is what I have here and proper value assessment?
Thank you,
Hobub

I'm pretty sure your coin is considered jewelry now with the ring attached.
Re: 1899 9/9 dime A.U.
Hi and thanks for your reply. It is not permanently mounted on the clasp. The top holds it in place there with a small screw. No damage on the rim or anywhere on the coin.
Re: 1899 9/9 dime A.U.
No damage to the coin would probably be ok it looked like it was attached to the rim by a weld

Here is what I found on the clasp. This is the item.

Still curious on thoughts of condition and value on the dime. And any more info on the doubling of the second 9. I have placed it in a nickel size 2x2 in the clasp but could easily remove it if it is best for the coin.

I'm not real good at these years for grades but I think it might make VF-30-EF-40 for condition with DP large 9.

Great find! Looks like DP to me.
Re: 1899 9/9 dime A.U.
Thank you. DP (double punch), I would say at least XF. With all the luster still present maybe AU. I don’t know much about Canadian coins and never saw one this old with so much detail before finding this one. But according to chart here XF Large 9’s books about $238. Probably will need to send to NGC to be certain
