Richelieu Hotel - I.B. Durocher - Montreal

Description

These were never used in the hotel ; a number of the checks were given away.

Businessman Seraphino Giraldi built the Richelieu Hotel in 1858. Giraldi had previously acquired the site in 1828 where there were stables. The lot is located north of another of its properties, the house Edward William Gray.

The building is first occupied primarily by law firms, including those of Louis Bétournay, Georges-Étienne Cartier, Sévère Rivard and Antoine-Aimé Dorion. The top floor is reserved for housing. The building remained in the hands of the Giraldi's heirs until 1873.

The Richelieu Hotel changed vocation in the mid 1870s with the change of ownership. The new owner, Isidore Brien Durocher, already owns the hotel Richelieu neighbor. It transforms the office building into a hotel with forty rooms. Although Durocher transferred ownership of the building to Saveuse de Beaujeu around 1890, it continues to lead the hotel for ten years. After the closing of the Richelieu Hotel in 1902, the Club Jacques-Cartier with the association of the Conservative Party, occupied for almost a decade throughout the building. After two fires in 1912 and 1913, the building is renovated. Le Devoir moved there in 1914, then left ten years later when the Quebec government acquired the building to accommodate the offices of coroner, morgue, medical and laboratory research. When these legal services are relocated in 1969 on Parthenais Street, the building was modified to accommodate a new restaurant on the ground floor and offices on the upper floors. In 2008, the building was under restoration.
